Listening Blog 8 (Hotel California)

 Throughout my childhood, this song was one of my favorites for my dad to play and listen to. I love how the entire song feels like a trance making you feel like "you can't ever leave"! There are a lot of layers in this song: electric guitar, acoustic guitar, drums, bass, lead singer, and the shakers. In the middle of the song, everything slows down, and only the singer, the "tat" of the drum, and the acoustic guitar are in. But right after, there is a two minute guitar solo. The entire feel of the song shifts in different parts of the song. I get a vibe like a charmer charming a snake to come out of a basket. Through some research, I found out that someone said this song was musically unorganized and would never become a top hit. Having a minute intro and a two minute outro seemed unorthadoxed, but it worked! Through the entire song, it starts with a slow build up and continuously adds more layers of music. I think this represents how this specific hotel makes it hard to escape from all the layers of music and love this person has for a woman at this hotel.

    I like the visual you use of a snake being charmed to come out a basket and how you described the representation of a hotel that's hard to escape. It's cool to see how they chose to layer the music and how they make the long intro and outro work for them.

    I'm not really a huge fan of music from this era but there's just something about Hotel California that everyone's gotta love. The symbolism of the whole song is immense and the lyrics have miles and miles of depth beneath them. It's a classic.

    I personally am not a huge fan of this genre of music but this song is one of my all time favorites for not reason. The way it paints a picture is fantastic and the lyrics with the instrumentation is a fantastic combo everything just works.

Listening Blog 12 (Thrift Shopping)

 When we started this class in January, I saw that we would learn about this song in the very last chapter! This song is very interesting because it's about thrifting and stealing. The line "I'm gonna pop some tags" literally means he is stealing from the thrift store. I love how this song starts off with a child asking if she can go thrift shopping and followed by a series of "what". The overall feel of this song is dance music but with a darker fun feeling. The constant sound of the saxophone in the background really makes this song stand out. This song gives me the vibes of do not care what others think because you found something unique for a steal while others go to brand stores and pay $50 for a shirt that ten other people have. The simple build up in the song is unique with two voices repeating the same phrase until the saxophone comes in and gives the song it's uniqueness.
