Listening Blog 3 (My Blue Heaven)

Everything in this song is very smooth and floaty, and I like to think this was on purpose because of the idea of Heaven. Supposedly, Heaven is in the sky, helping to support the idea of the floaty feeling of the song. Gene Austin's voice is very calm and relaxed, and in one part of the song, he has this interesting part where he mimics the melody; I think this one little spot gives the impression that he can do whatever he wants to do in his Heaven. To continue to this idea, why is the song called "Blue Heaven" instead of red or green? Including "Blue" also adds to the idea that in his Heaven, he can do whatever he permits or wants.

However, "Blue" could be represented by the color of his house that he calls Heaven. He talks about his wife and a new baby, and hopefully, a this new baby wouldn't already be in Heaven, so I think his heaven is within the walls of his own home surrounded by his wife Molly and his baby.

Towards the end of the song, a sort of whistle or flute comes in to mimic the sound of birds tweeting. Birds are often associated with Heaven and living a peaceful life. At the end of the song, Jolson's voice resolves ascending into higher notes, showing a lifted spirit or that he is about to go home to his own Heaven.

  1. Hey guys, one thing that makes me into this song is its title, My blue heaven. As we know heaven is the abode of God, angels in addition to the spirits of righteous after passing away. Seeing this word, I love the song. Thank you.

  2. I love your interpretation of the lyrics, I definitely would not have thought of the same things. I liked how you interpreted the use of Blue in Blue heaven, how he really could've picked any color to describe his heaven, as it's his. I personally thought of the blue as the blues before I listened to the song but it's not really a blues song after listening to it. A great song choice!
